November 1, 2024

The North Atlantic right whale migration and calving season has begun for the Mid-Atlantic and seasonal speed restrictions are in effect in that area (RI-GA).

The modifications to the rule that were proposed in the summer of 2022 have not been finalized, so the same rule that has been in effect since 2009 is current (50 CFR § 224.105).

The Mid-Atlantic Seasonal Management Area (Block Island, RI to south of Savannah, GA) began November 1. The associated speed restriction of 10 knots for vessels greater than 65 feet in overall length will remain in effect through April 30, 2025.

The Southeast U.S. Seasonal Management Area (which includes the ports of Brunswick, Fernandina, and Jacksonville) ship speed restrictions become effective on November 15, and will remain in place through April 15, 2025.

Please report right whale sightings: 1-877-WHALE HELP (1-877-942-5343) or U.S. Coast Guard Channel 16. If you or any of your vessels wish to be placed on the real-time whale alert advisory system in the Southeast US., send an email to nmfs.ser.rw.subscribe@noaa.gov.

A one-page summary of the above is available online.
